Junior Soccer Gala Day – Saturday May 4, 2013

The soccer season kicked off in Young last Saturday with the annual gala day. All teams played three games of soccer to warm up for the year.

For many of 6’s it was the first time they’d played and rules were somewhat unknown! They continued happily chasing the ball each game but by the end of the day they were a bit wiser. There are three Grenfell teams in this year’s competition which is quite an achievement given Young only has four.

The 7’s are mostly old hands and took to the field very excitedly. There was some great goal saving, something new as the 6’s play without a goalie, and keen attacking skills.

The 8’s had mixed fortunes as their opposition failed to show up on two occasions – they must have heard about our tenacious player. A reshuffle with the draw saw them finally take the field for a satisfying run.

Two teams of 10’s are competing this year. They had some wins and some losses but learnt more about the rules and positions by the day’s end. All kids played hard and tried to listen to their coaches.

The 12’s team has a substantial number of female players as the girls outnumber the boys 10 to 3. The boys didn’t let this overwhelm them and all players stepped into positions well, many showing better form than last year. Last year our 12’s were runners up – we’ll have to wait and see what this year brings.

The 14’s are short on numbers and a serious injury to Jess Pereira in the first game saw Connor Day and Andrew Knight from the 12’s run off one field and onto another. The 14’s had tightly contested games and given there were no subs this was a great effort.

The 17’s play their first game this weekend in their new “Spray Safe and Save” shirts. We wish them well as they take on Boorowa in the first round of competition.

At our home game on Saturday, the new canteen will be in operation for the first time. This is a great achievement for a small, but very determined and hard-working, group of volunteers.

Last minute words from coach Ross Brenner to his Mitton Brothers Under 10’s team.
