LEETON United has suffered two 1-0 losses in less than a week, but coach Mitchell Clay is seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

United played a State Cup game last weekend and followed that up with its delayed Griffith association match-up against Hanwood on Wednesday night.

However, both performances had plenty of positives according to Clay, particularly the response to Hanwood scoring early after a “silly error” from a corner.

“It was a good game, the performance was great,” he said.

“They scored in the first 10 to 15 and I was surprised our heads didn’t go down. It was all positive.

“We had plenty of chances to score. It was a tight game and we put them off their game.

“We had our chances and they had to make subs and mix up their combinations because of our pressure.”

United’s State League game against Padstow United was almost the opposite, with the visitors scoring at the death in the 89th minute.

“It was a similar kind of game,” Clay said.

“We had chances, easier chances. The second half was one-way traffic from our end.”

After playing away for the first four rounds, United will finally host an opponent this weekend, with Yoogali Football Club playing at No. 2 Oval on Sunday.

“I saw a bit of them in the pre-season tournament,” Clay said. “I know a bit about them, they don’t worry us.

“We’ve played the top two teams and everything else we’ll be able to handle.”

Brought in to build a club culture and grow United over seasons instead of a quick-fix, Clay is happy with progress so far.

“The style of football we are playing at the minute is good, it’s great to watch,” he said. “We just need to cut out the silly little mistakes.

“The key is to keep it very structured. In the first 15 to 20 we do not concede and then we need to take that chance to go 1-0 up.”
