GUNNEDAH High School has welcomed a new Principal who brings a positive outlook and a wealth of experience with him.
Shane Kelly has been appointed to the top job, following a move from Parkes High School where he was Deputy Principal.
Prior to that, Mr Kelly was employed as the Deputy Principal of Waratah Technology Campus, at Newcastle.
The new appointment follows a high turnover of Principals at Gunnedah High School in recent years.
Mr Kelly said he is aware of the situation and is looking forward to ensuring some stability.
“I’m very aware of the Principal situation here and I want everyone to know that I’m here for a number of years,” Mr Kelly said.
“I want to build the stability of leadership up at the school and I’m here to stay.”
Mr Kelly said one of his main focuses is to see enrolment numbers increase and suspension levels decrease.
“I want to create a student environment with less issues, so that they are able to reach their potential and either further their studies or gain employment,” he said.
“I’m aware there will be challenges and with the help of the deputys, we will be working with students, staff and the community to better the school.”
Mr Kelly will be aided in his ambitions by newly appointed Deputy Principals, Wendy Blaker and Lyn Thomas.
“The leadership team will be focusing on improving school-wide systems and procedures,” he said.
“We will look at how other schools operate in regards to discipline techniques.
“If children are exhibiting poor behaviour we will be working with their families to resolve the problems – parents need to be involved.”
Mr Kelly said when he first drove past the school he was impressed with the grounds and facilities.
“It’s an impressive looking school, the grounds are well kept and the facilities are of a high standard,” Mr Kelly said.
He said faculty and students have been very friendly and welcoming, making his first few weeks a wonderful start.
“Gunnedah is a friendly town, I’m looking forward to joining the community.”
Mr Kelly has moved to Gunnedah, with his family soon to follow and hopes to become a member of the Gunnedah Golf Club as he is a keen golfer.
GUNNEDAH High School’s new Principal, Shane Kelly has begun his first term.
