A SPECIAL EVENT: Image from Cowra Relay for Life 2013. Getting ready for the Survivors and Carers special lap. Relay For Life is on this weekend at Sid Kallas Oval and with $30,000 already having been presented to the Cancer Council, it’s shaping up to be a very successful weekend.
Thirty-four teams and 383 participants are gearing up to take to the track on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12, May in an 18 hour walk, fighting back against cancer.
Committee organiser, Sylvia White said the fundraising efforts have been very impressive so far.
“We’ve already passed the $27,000 that was raised in total,” she said.
“We’ve got a target of $50,000 so we’re hoping to reach that and I would say we’re well on the way.”
A BBQ held outside Woolworths on Saturday 27, April helped raise funds, with Mrs White thanking Woolworths for their food donations and the NSW Fire Brigade for cooking the sausages to perfection.
A Mother’s Day raffle featuring a range of goodies will be drawn on Sunday morning at Relay for Life, with mum having to be in attendance to claim the special prize.
Mrs White said there’s still time for people looking to get involved to either join a team or sign up on the day.
“People don’t even have to be in a team, they can come down and walk by themselves if they want,” she said.
“Carers and survivors can also just come down on the Saturday afternoon and register.
“The first lap will be for carers and survivors and then we’ll be putting on a special afternoon for them while the relay starts.”
Mrs White said this year will also feature a special way of honouring loved ones lost to cancer.
All families who have lost a family member or friend to cancer are invited to send in their name or photograph.
“We’ll have a big screen with photos running across it so we’d love people to send a photo in but even if they don’t want to send a photo, they can just send a name if they would like,” she said.
Mrs White requested anyone who would like to email either photographs or names of loved ones to please do so to [email protected]
