WELL done to Jess Fairburn for her great generosity, consideration and care for others in the community.
While she celebrates her 21st birthday tomorrow she has embraced the concept of gifts by giving rather than receiving.
She has put out a request to family and friends to give toys, books and DVDs to the Bowral Hospital children’s ward in lieu of giving her a birthday present.
But her kind gesture doesn’t stop there. Jess has decided to also gather a variety of items for the children’s ward so that she too can hand over a present rather than receive on her birthday.
The move is not something Jess has considered lightly. In fact her generous gesture has been two years in the planning stages.
And in a society when materialism appears to be in overdrive it is equally impressive to learn that the simple things in life are not lost on Jess.
“I have everything I need,” she said. “I’m alive, healthy and happy, I don’t really need anything else.”
I think Jess is sending out a message that should be adopted by everyone – appreciate the simple things in life and spare a thought for others.
As she celebrates this milestone occasion, which is often considered as a day when big gifts such as holidays and cars are handed over, this young woman has made a selfless gesture that has the potential to benefit so many more young people at a time when they are sick and truly need a boost. We could take a leaf out of her book.
Here’s hoping Jess has a wonderful birthday celebration and a great future.
