On Sunday 5th May, Kangaroo Island Netball Association and the Dudley United Netball Club hosted the Southern Academy training session, for which 50 mainland netballers and 18 coaches and umpire officials made the crossing to the island for the second time in three years.

Kangaroo Island’s representatives in the under 13 squad Andrea Horjus (coach), Georgie Horjus and Taj Rongo make regular trips to the mainland to attend these elite training sessions, and we are indeed grateful that we can host a session.

In the afternoon, the Kangaroo Island junior representative teams were invited to play against these squads and it was exceptionally pleasing to see the quality and competiveness of the island girls against the other teams.

Regional Southern Academy is a pathway to state and national selection, so for the island girls and the coaching staff it was a great opportunity to see the calibre of the teams KI could potentially be playing against at the SA Country Championships in June.

Julie Helyar and Kim Berlin have accepted the team umpiring duties and had some mentoring from Michael Woollatt (Umpire Program Manager), who has been coming to the island conducting sessions for the past three years. Julie has been nominated to be tested for her National C badge at these championships, so we wish her all the best!

We would like to thank Dudley United for hosting and providing the squads with lunch, and the Sealink Travel Group for their incredible sponsorship and support of our representative players and the development of our coaches and umpires.

Prints of KI Sport photos can be ordered online at Photo Sales.
