Carnival draws large numbers

ADINNER at the Streaky Bay Hotel marked the start of the 25th annual WhitingCarnival for the Streaky Bay Bowling Club.

Around100 visitors and locals attended the dinner with Janine Brown providing aPowerPoint presentation, giving some interesting insight into past carnivals.

MargaretVincent cut the birthday cake provided by Karen Trezona.

Dessertfor the evening was the cake, with extra cake provided by Karen and Polly Hull.

Thehighlight of the evening was the surprise presentation of Life Membership ofthe Bowling Club to veteran bowlers Geoff Francis and Allan Vincent.

Bothmembers have worked tirelessly for the club for many years and the Club felt itwas great to see their efforts were rewarded with this award.

Thefirst day of the carnival events was held on Sunday, May 5 with mixed fours.This year there are over two hundred bowlers playing during the week, witharound forty clubs represented, making it the biggest Whiting Carnival in theclub’s history. To commemorate the silver anniversary of the carnival, playerswere given a monogrammed bowls cloth.

46teams competed on Sunday, with some great games played during the day.

Whenthe scores were collated at the conclusion of the games, there were seven teamswho won all three games and eight teams with no wins.

Theseven three-game winners had scores with only five points between the top andbottom team.

TheCoffin Bay team of Lorraine Shepperd, Darryl Behncke, Jan Behncke and PeterShepperd were the winning team with 81 points.

With80 points, the runners-up were Nancy Warne from Pt Pirie, Ian Williams fromBruthen in Victoria, and Robyn and Mike Swanson from Streaky Bay.

Thethird and fourth placegetters each had 79 points and had to be decided bypercentage.

TheReddings from Yorketown, teamed with Pauline Eichner from Hahndorf and PeterDabovich from Western Australia took out third spot.

Awell-liked whiting tea rounded off a very successful day.

Mixedpairs played again on Monday and Tuesday, today is mixed fours again, but withthe Ladies skippering.

Tomorrowthe ladies play fours and the men’s fours are played on Saturday.
